Joko
A memory game that explores the diversity of our animal world
Joko by Martina Steckholzer is the new book from the publishing house les cerises – co-founded by Angelika Burtscher and Daniele Lupo with Agnese and Cecilia Canziani.
The artist Martina Steckholzer has transferred some animals from the collection of the Natural History Museum Vienna to watercolor and painted each animal twice. In the game, we not only look for the right pairs, but also discover the uniqueness of each animal in its diversity. The memory game takes young and old on a journey through the water, the air, the forests and meadows and introduces some (perhaps already forgotten) inhabitants of our planet.
Martina Steckholzer is a painter who lives and works in Vienna. She finds her inspiration for her images in museum collections, which she then translates into large-scale paintings and small-format watercolors. In doing so, the artist interweaves what she has seen and experienced, creating new contexts and narratives.
For les cerises, the artist has painted 60 different memory cards, giving space to the imperfection of nature. She gives new life to each animal from the collection of the Natural History Museum Vienna through her use of color, water and her own hand movements, thus translating the diverse nuances of the animal world.
