Down Dog by Marta Roberti is the new book from the publishing house les cerises – co-founded by Angelika Burtscher and Daniele Lupo with Agnese and Cecilia Canziani.
Down Dog is a children’s book that, through Marta Roberti’s illustrations, explores the theme of yoga in a creative and dynamic way. Human body postures intertwine with those of animals, giving life to a series of asanas inspired by the movements of felines, reptiles, and insects, suggesting new ways to occupy space with lightness and fluidity.
In her drawings, created on paper using carbon paper as if it were a color or a transfer technique, the human body merges with the natural and vegetal world in a continuous process of transformation and metamorphosis. In yoga, each pose is named after an animal; in this book, Marta Roberti invites us to observe how animals move and rest, drawing inspiration from their motions to invent new postures and new ways of inhabiting space.
The book’s design, curated by Lungomare, stands out for its flexible format made of thin paper, with folded pages to open and browse, alluding to the fluid movement of the body. This visual dialogue creates a playful and dynamic experience, where the movement and transformation of figures encourage young readers to engage in a creative reflection on the body and nature.
