abseits – fuori gioco
Football – one of the most spontaneous, simple and well-know games – is both a sport of extreme economic importance and one which is widespread and incredibly influential. The World Cup Anthem will be the soundtrack to the summer, the flags will become consumer goods and the team colours a fashion trend. During the World Cup even laymen become enthusiastic spectators, new football stars are discovered amongst the boys playing on the streets of Brazil and the national identity becomes an out and out legend: we are all Italians, Germans and Argentines when we shout for our team at the top of our voices or is it perhaps that we are searching for a sense of identification and lost love for our country? Is football a game between cultures, a game which allows us to overcome “national differences” without violence? After all crimes and homicides are prohibited on the football pitch.
Or perhaps football can be described as giving a competitive edge in the world of politics? How else can one explain the rise of Silvio Berlusconi from President of Milan to Prime Minister? Other fundamental questions can be added to this on: whose face will Totti spit in this time? What kind of look and hairstyles will the Beckham’s adopt? Who will be the new star of this World Cup?
The World Cup is for everyone. The World Cup is much more than just a sporting event. An emotion. A festival of humanity. For many the substitute for a religion. A universal cult which unites us all has developed and spread around the phenomenon of football. The important thing is that neither the fame nor the honour be lost. One last question: who is all this for? For oneself, for one’s country or for the fans?
Lungomare
Lungomare is taking an interest in the event of the 2006 World Cup too and taking the scope and importance of this global event as the themes for an exhibition which gives space to the “universal culture of football” and dedicates the month of June to presenting related projects and actions. Designers and artists from different European countries react in a critical, ironic, joking and poetic fashion to this worldwide cult. Lungomare becomes a miniature stadium: in the garden, transformed into a football pitch a gallery will be constructed and the matches will be shown on a giant screen. Visitors will be offered a dynamic and interactive surface in which to play and meet each other.

EXHIBITION :: Binta Diaw :: Collective Practices – A Living Experience of Feeling ListenedAbout Lungomare
Lungomare, a cultural association founded in Bolzano in 2003, was created from the desire and necessity to open a space in which to share differences, experiences, opinions and desires, a space in which to make the link between cultural production and the political and social dimension. Lungomare undertakes projects that investigate and test possible relationships between design, architecture, urban planning, art and theory, the results of which are presented in different formats: public discussions, conferences, publications, exhibitions and interventions in public spaces. All these formats are characterised by the intention to interact with cultural and socio-political processes relating to the region in which Lungomare is located.
Currently Lungomare’s activities focus on long-term residency projects, a format whereby Lungomare invites guests to engage and interact within the context of South Tyrol. Lungomare’s activities are based on three principles: specific attention to the context in which the association’s projects are undertaken, the transdisciplinary approach that distinguishes these projects, and reflection on the role of Lungomare as a cultural institution in connection with the region in which it operates.
Territory
Lungomare is located at the edge of Bolzano, the capital of South Tyrol, and relates to the context in which it operates, attempting to highlight the dynamics of change. Large urbanized areas alternate with broad areas of intensive cultivation and yet others of picturesque landscape, all of which penetrate the centre of the city. The city is surrounded by mountains and this is one of the reasons why the tourism industry has become a driving force in this locality. The demographic structure of the city has been characterized for a long time by the coexistence of two populations, those speaking German and those speaking Italian. However, the social and demographic composition of Alto Adige Südtirol is changing. Migrants, including those from non-European countries are making their way to the area to settle, whilst others, including political refugees, are flowing through the region.
