Summer Drafts
Workshops, Encounters, Events
Summer Drafts is a series of workshops and events guided by international artists and theorists that, in collaboration with intercultural associations of Bolzano, develop organizational and participative formats. Common thread of the meetings is the constitution of informal spaces of aggregation: using a creative approach developed through non-representational art practices, Summer Drafts experiments forms of sociality which operates transversally to the different cultural identities of a specific territory.
The project
Summer Drafts consist in a series of workshops and events led by international artists interested in processes of participation and organization. The artists will work together with a group of participants: Italians, German, and others from different “cultural-linguistic” groups present in Bolzano. Beside the workshops involving the participation of this “intercultural” group, Summer Drafts offers encounters open to the public and workshops with a specific target.
Associations of Bolzano working with migrants on the territory are involved in Summer Drafts with a role of mediation between the artists and the local context. Some of them are collaborating together with the artist in the preparation of the workshops. Common thread of the meetings is the “topic” of “informal spaces”, spaces of encounter that are not institutionally regulated, and do not presuppose a predetermined physical structure, but are rather constituted through the coming together of people.
Activities
Summer Drafts offers both events open to the public and workshops for an intercultural group of participants. Workshops, encounters, events will take place both at Lungomare and around the city of Bolzano. Summer Drafts will open with a presentation of the anthropologist Franco La Cecla who will introduce his last book “Contro l’architettura”, building a relation with Summer Drafts and the thematic of informal spaces. In the afternoon the artists collective UNWETTER will prepare a discursive picnic open to the public that will function as an initial moment of aggregation through the participation of the different associations and artists involved in the project. The next day, Franco La Cecla will lead a workshop for intercultural social workers. The following weekend is entrusted to Amy Plant, who will prepare a workshop on informal learning together with the association Giant-Bi. During three weeks, the Committee for Radical Diplomacy will institute in Bolzano a sort of lost/found agency, an itinerant office to reactivate lost competences, passions and desires (or to help getting rid of the undesired ones). For the closing event of the project the artist Hiwa K will prepare, together with the participants, a dish that will translate into food some of the issues emerged during the four weeks of the project.

Within the Discursive Picnic all participants are simultaneously guest and host. Its potluck format encourages all attendees to bring along various contributions and to combine them with the materials unpacked from the UNWETTER thermos-box. The Discursive Picnic creates a common operational space and provides an informal structure for temporary organization, nomadic performances, and networks of discursive and dialogical relationships among participants.
The project “Summer Drafts” opens with an informal breakfast and a round table discussion with the anthropologist and architect Franco La Cecla.
Carlo Calderan, architect and chief editor of the journal Turris Babel, leads the discussion with the “Summer Drafts” project artists.
Informal learning is knowledge, which has not been captured and exists only inside someone’s head. To access that knowledge you have to find the person who can share it with you. Knowledge is worthless if you keep it to yourself. Working “informal learning” taking place between individuals and groups in Bolzano. During this short period of investigation, we will devise the workshop together. Because the nature of informal learning is responsive, it is impossible to know the outcome in advance. It works through, and is driven by conversation. It involves exploring and enlarging experience and it can take place anywhere.
“Ci mancherebbe altro! / Fehlt dir etwas?” On missing, losing and getting rid of something Did you ever lose something that you never found back? Or conversely, are you desperate to get rid of something? The Committee for Radical Diplomacy will establish a transversal lost/found agency over three weeks in Bolzano, working with various games and methodologies that allow us to address what we miss, lost, found or want to get rid of – with the aim of doing something about these things. The lost / found agency will operate as an informal space, the organization of which will be up to us; how can we support, find and re-search our desires, hopes and ideas within collective processes?
For the closing event of Summer Drafts, Hiwa K will prepare a “Cooking with Mama”, involving the public and the participants in the preparation and consumption of food, cooked simultaneously with the mother in Iraq: mother and son will be connected via skype. Usually is the mother who shows how to cook an Iraqi dish, but in this case the participants of Summer Drafts will think a dish to cook together with Hiwa’s mother and other people outside Bolzano. The dish will be an attempt to translate into food the experience of Summer Drafts, whose results will be therefore symbolically projected beyond the context of the Bolzano.

EXHIBITION :: Binta Diaw :: Collective Practices – A Living Experience of Feeling ListenedAbout Lungomare
Lungomare, a cultural association founded in Bolzano in 2003, was created from the desire and necessity to open a space in which to share differences, experiences, opinions and desires, a space in which to make the link between cultural production and the political and social dimension. Lungomare undertakes projects that investigate and test possible relationships between design, architecture, urban planning, art and theory, the results of which are presented in different formats: public discussions, conferences, publications, exhibitions and interventions in public spaces. All these formats are characterised by the intention to interact with cultural and socio-political processes relating to the region in which Lungomare is located.
Currently Lungomare’s activities focus on long-term residency projects, a format whereby Lungomare invites guests to engage and interact within the context of South Tyrol. Lungomare’s activities are based on three principles: specific attention to the context in which the association’s projects are undertaken, the transdisciplinary approach that distinguishes these projects, and reflection on the role of Lungomare as a cultural institution in connection with the region in which it operates.
Territory
Lungomare is located at the edge of Bolzano, the capital of South Tyrol, and relates to the context in which it operates, attempting to highlight the dynamics of change. Large urbanized areas alternate with broad areas of intensive cultivation and yet others of picturesque landscape, all of which penetrate the centre of the city. The city is surrounded by mountains and this is one of the reasons why the tourism industry has become a driving force in this locality. The demographic structure of the city has been characterized for a long time by the coexistence of two populations, those speaking German and those speaking Italian. However, the social and demographic composition of Alto Adige Südtirol is changing. Migrants, including those from non-European countries are making their way to the area to settle, whilst others, including political refugees, are flowing through the region.
